The player manipulates sliding tiles engraved with sections of track to create a continuous path that allows a metal marble to roll from its starting point to the exit. Unlike a fixed maze, the Slide Maze board is entirely modular: each tile can slide within its row or column, forcing players to anticipate the consequences of each move even before releasing the marble.
The game’s originality lies in this blend of the sliding-piece puzzle and the marble run—two typically distinct mechanics brought together in a compact format designed for travel.
To tackle a challenge, the player selects one of the sixty puzzles offered—organized by increasing difficulty—and positions the sliding tiles according to the indicated starting configuration.
They then slide the various tiles along the rows and columns of the board to gradually align the engraved track sections, with the goal of forming a single, unbroken path connecting the starting point to the exit. Once the setup is deemed correct, they place the metal marble on the board to check whether it actually reaches the exit without being interrupted along the way.
If the marble stops along the way, the player knows they must adjust the position of one or more tiles before trying again, with no penalty for these repeated attempts.
Once the path is validated, the solution printed on the back of the challenge card confirms that the configuration found matches the intended one, before moving on to the next challenge. The game ends at the end of each session when the player has solved the number of challenges they set for themselves, with no time limit imposed.
