Monza Refresh: a Haba racing game with a modular track for 2 to 6 players
Discover this game for kids, which has been given an attractive makeover and is sure to appeal to them even more. The gameplay that made it a hit remains unchanged in this refreshed version.
Monza Refresh is a car racing game published by Haba, based on the concept of rolling colored dice first introduced in the original Monza from 2000, designed by Jürgen P. K. Grunau.
The goal for each player is to move their wooden car as far as possible on each turn by matching the colors of their dice to the track spaces in front of them, in order to cross the finish line first.
What makes this “Refresh” edition unique is its fully modular track: the 20 track pieces (10 turns and 10 straights) replace the fixed board from previous versions and allow players to build a different layout for each game, accommodating 2 to 6 players instead of the maximum of 4 in the original edition.
Setup and Gameplay for a Game of Monza Refresh
Setup involves assembling the 20 track pieces around a start tile and a finish tile to create a unique course for each game. Each player places their car on one of the starting spaces, then the 6 colored dice are placed in the center of the table.
On their turn, the player rolls all the dice at once and must use their colors to move: a die can only be used to move if its color matches an adjacent space in front of the car. The goal is to chain together as many dice as possible in a single turn to cover the greatest distance. The 49 included cardboard listings add a more tactical twist, with bonuses for acceleration or re-rolling dice.
Victory Conditions and End of the Game in Monza Refresh
The game ends as soon as a player crosses the finish line marked by the designated tile. If multiple cars cross it during the same turn, the one that used the fewest dice to do so wins the race.
Monza Refresh’s modular track allows you to vary the length and difficulty of the course from one game to the next, without ever playing exactly the same layout twice.
