While civil divisions and council governance may suffice for the day-to-day management of a village, the Ukunfazane understood that his unruly people would need a firm hand on the reins when they ventured into war.

Thus the role of the chief was born: chosen from among the wisest and most experienced W'adrhŭn fighters, he is placed outside the village hierarchy. Chiefs only have authority in the context of a raid or military campaign, but then their power is absolute.
