Following the miraculous success of the First Crusade in 1097, three Christian kingdoms emerged in the Holy Land: the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Principality of Antioch, and the County of Edessa. But in 1144, the Crusaders suffered their first setback with the fall of Edessa to Zengi (ruler of Mosul and Aleppo), which triggered the Second Crusade.
Each turn, players receive a variable number of cards, which may be troop, event, or response cards, and, taking turns, they use them to try to expand their kingdom. The winner is the player who controls the most territories at the end of the game.
There are four different game scenarios covering the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Crusades. The game supports cooperative, competitive, and solo play modes.
