In Abroad, players take on the role of candidates vying for a prestigious position as a travel guide writer, with four weeks to travel across Europe, visit iconic landmarks, and gather insider tips to include in their articles.
The game’s originality lies in the scope of its card set, which features over 240 unique locations spread across the ten European regions on the game board, offering considerable replay value for a game of this format.
A game consists of four rounds, each representing a seven-day week, for a total of twenty-eight days of travel. On their turn, a player may stay in their current region or travel to a new destination—with the train costing Energy and the plane costing Money—and then choose one of four activities: write about the current location to earn points or bonuses, rest by discarding cards in exchange for Energy, plan by drawing new cards, or perform an activity by playing a card from their hand that corresponds to their region, at the cost of the indicated number of days.
The locations visited accumulate tags that create synergies, reduce future travel costs, or allow players to complete the shared “Bucket List” objectives specific to each region.
The game ends after twenty-eight days of travel. Players then tally the points earned from the cards played on their boards, the “Postcard” objectives received at the start of the game and completed, as well as the majority bonuses earned in the various European regions visited.
The player with the most points at the end of the trip wins the game and secures the coveted position of travel guide writer.
