Trading card games and living card games: two formats, one shared mechanic

Here you'll find the best of the Trading Card Game (TCG, also known as CCG for Collectible Card Game) in booster or pack form, alongside a selection of Living Card Games (LCG).

What is a trading card game?

Trading card games are built around a large variety of cards that players use to build and customise their decks. Cards are sold in boosters or boxes (displays, boxes, packs): each booster contains a random assortment of cards, distributed across different rarity levels (common, uncommon, rare...). Each card has an effect on gameplay and generally features an illustration along with text describing how it works. This random distribution is central to the TCG model: it encourages players to trade or buy additional boosters to complete their collection and refine their deck.

The essential trading card games

The best-known trading card game is Magic: The Gathering, created in 1993 by Richard Garfield. In recent years, other TCGs have established themselves as references, such as Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, and more recently Lorcana, Star Wars Unlimited, One Piece or Riftbound: League of Legends. These games are sometimes also called "collectible card games" or "trading card games", though terminology varies.

The living card game (LCG), a collection without randomness

Alongside the term trading card game, the expression living card game (LCG) emerged to describe a different type of card game. LCGs are not, strictly speaking, synonymous with TCGs: they refer to games built around a deck that evolves over time, but without the notion of card rarity that defines TCGs. Players can buy each new expansion in full, typically as a single pack or box identical for every player. Everyone therefore has access to the same content, without relying on random packs or a trading market. Examples include The Lord of the Rings LCG, Marvel Champions and Arkham Horror: The Card Game, which often feature a campaign mode allowing a deck to evolve from one game to the next.

Choosing between a trading card game and a living card game

The choice between these two formats mainly comes down to how you want to approach your collection. TCGs suit players drawn to chasing rare cards, trading, and gradually building a deck through opened boosters. LCGs appeal more to those who prefer a fixed, predictable content from the moment of purchase, without relying on chance, and who are looking for narrative progression through expansions or campaigns. In both cases, the depth of the mechanics and the regular release of new expansions ensure strong replay value.
