Player objectives, game mechanics and lore
In Surfin’ Cats, players embody surfing cats in an 80s retro universe, where waves are both challenges and opportunities. The goal is to accumulate the most Flow Points by performing tricks across five rounds. Each trick played enhances your position on the wave, but poor deck management or opponent interference can lead to a wipeout, nullifying your round’s gains.
The game’s uniqueness lies in its blend of hand management, deck-building, and push-your-luck. Players start with a basic deck and must decide whether to enhance it by purchasing trick cards at the cost of Flow Points or take risks to maximize immediate scoring. Each cat has a unique signature ability, providing specific tactical advantages.
Setting up and playing the game
The game unfolds over five rounds, each representing a wave. At the start of each round, a wave card is revealed, outlining the conditions to score points (e.g., performing a trick of level 3 or higher). Players must manage their hand of trick cards to position their cat on the wave.
A central market offers trick cards for purchase using Flow Points, allowing players to enhance their deck. Players can also leverage special abilities tied to their cat. However, opponents can play cards to disrupt your position or trigger a wipeout if you push your luck too far.
Victory conditions and end of the game
The game ends after five rounds. The player with the most Flow Points at the end of the fifth wave is declared the winner. Objective cards revealed at the start add a strategic layer, offering bonus points for specific conditions (e.g., having the most tricks of a particular color).
A penalty system applies in case of a wipeout, limiting the impact of falls on the final score. A full game lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, making it ideal for quick sessions.
