Blade & Bow: The Ancient World at War is a game system of light to moderate complexity depicting combat between ancient armies, with the aim of showing the evolution of infantry combat, from the adoption of the Greek hoplite formation to the Roman maniple and cohort. Two players take control of historical armies to see how they would perform compared to their historical counterparts. Each battle lasts two to three hours.
This first volume in the series includes the battles of Marathon (490 BC), Thermopylae (480 BC), Plataea (479 BC) and Mycale (479 BC), where mighty Greek and Spartan soldiers stood up to the invading Persian hordes.
Unlike other ancient combat systems, Blade & Bow takes a unique approach to the way armies were deployed and maneuvered in a linear fashion, using a grid of squares rather than hexagons, to deliver a more realistic experience. Command is crucial, as leaders must provide the leadership needed to keep their forces moving until the inevitable shield clash, while keeping their troops engaged in the violent back-and-forth of ancient combat. A deck of event cards adds a touch of historical realism as well as a little chaos.
