Jumo: a party game of word association for 3 to 8 players
Jumo is a party game that won the 2026 Grand Prix du Jouet in the Party Game category. The goal for each player is to get rid of the cards in their starting hand—which consists of five cards, each bearing a word—as quickly as possible.
What makes Jumo unique is its synchronization mechanic: to play a card, a player must find a logical connection between one of their words and an opponent’s, and then both players involved must say aloud—at exactly the same moment—the word that links their two cards.
This principle transforms a simple association of ideas into a challenge of reflexes and anticipation, since players must not only guess a relevant word but also the one the other player is likely to say at the same time.
Setup and Gameplay of Jumo
Setting up Jumo is quick: each player receives a hand of five cards, and the rest of the 240-card deck forms a common draw pile. During the game, a player announces aloud one of the words written on one of their cards and places it on the table. The other players then look at their own cards to find a word that can create a connection with the one that was just announced.
The first to react initiates the connection: both players count to three together, then must simultaneously say the word they believe links their two cards.
Winning Conditions and End of the Game in Jumo
If both players say exactly the same word at the same time, the connection is successful, and each player discards the relevant card. If the connection fails—due to different words or too much of a time lag—the players keep their cards and the game continues.
The first player to get rid of all the cards in their hand wins the game, which can happen very quickly given the estimated playing time of 15 to 20 minutes.
