The gameplay is based on an auction system: when a theme is revealed, players take turns announcing how many items from that category they think they can name, with each player trying to outbid their neighbor. The game’s atmosphere is driven by zany characters—such as Espresso-Pete, a coffee-addicted character; a shrewd bartender; a ghost; and even a frog—who set a humorous and offbeat tone.
The originality of High 5 lies in this escalating bidding, where each player must gauge how far they can push their opponent before that opponent is challenged to prove their claims.
Each round begins with the revelation of a theme, such as car brands or items found in a bar. Players then take turns announcing the number of items they think they can name on that theme, with each announcement having to exceed the previous one.
When the other players feel a bidder has gone too far, they can challenge them to deliver on their promise by actually naming the announced items within the allotted time. This tension between bluffing and risk-taking drives each round, which lasts just a few minutes.
If the challenged player manages to name the announced number of items, they retain their energy; otherwise, they lose some.
Rounds continue in this way until only one player with remaining energy is left, who then wins the game. Thanks to the fast pace of its rounds, High 5 usually ends in about fifteen minutes, making it an easy filler game to play several times in a row during an evening.
