Carcassonne 25ème Anniversaire Rétro: The Pixel Art Edition of the Cult Tile-Laying Game

Carcassonne 25th Anniversary is a special edition of the famous tile-laying game designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and published by Hans im Glück to celebrate the game’s 25th anniversary. The gameplay remains the same as in the original Carcassonne: on each turn, a player draws and places a tile depicting a fragment of a medieval landscape (city, road, abbey, or field), then may place a meeple on it to claim the structure under construction.

What makes this edition unique is its art direction, completely reimagined by illustrator Marcel Gröber in a pixel art style inspired by retro video games, featuring meeples redesigned with pixelated 3D models and a sliding-lid box that reveals the 8-bit world when opened.

The core game comes with the “The River” mini-expansion as well as a new mini-expansion exclusive to this edition, “The Pixel Fountains,” which introduces a brand-new placement rule.

Setup and Gameplay for Carcassonne 25ème Anniversaire Rétro

Setup follows the same procedure as in classic Carcassonne: the starting tile is placed in the center of the table, the remaining tiles form a face-down draw pile, and each player receives their colored meeples.

On their turn, a player draws a tile, places it adjacent to at least one tile already in play so that the landscape elements match (road to road, city to city, etc.), and then may place a meeple on the element they just completed, provided no other meeple is already there.

The “The River” mini-expansion introduces a path of water tiles to be placed at the start of the game, while “The Pixel Fountains” adds special tiles that allow for alternative movement between them.

Victory Conditions and End of the Game

As the game progresses, completing a city, a road, or an abbey allows a player to immediately retrieve their meeple and score the corresponding points; fields, however, are not scored until the very end. The game ends when the last tile from the draw pile has been placed. Unfinished structures then yield reduced points, and fields are finally scored based on the cities they supply.

The player with the highest total score wins the game.
