Quagmire: the tactical pond duel of leaping frogs by Perplext
Designed by Chris Handy and illustrated by Magdalena Markowska for Perplext, Quagmire is an abstract strategy and grid-movement board game for two to four players. Serving as the full-sized expansion of the microgame BOG from the Pack O Game series, this title turns a peaceful pond into a sharp spatial arena where every hop requires foresight. Each participant maneuvers a team of frogs navigating lily pads to catch flies, leap onto rival amphibians, and complete calculated geometric formations. The game features:
- A modular game board composed of sixteen lily pad tiles arranged in a four-by-four grid.
- Multi-use cards functioning simultaneously as programmed movement routes and geometric scoring patterns.
- Perspective-based gameplay where each player views paths and patterns from their own side of the board.
Programmed hops, frog squishing, and geometric pattern scoring
Matches require sharp spatial anticipation across four primary turn actions:
- Spawning on the shore: Place a frog card from your hand onto your personal shoreboard to prepare its entry onto the pond.
- Navigating routes: Advance a frog along the exact sequence of hops dictated by its route card, chasing fly tokens to draw fresh cards into your hand.
- Squishing rival frogs: Land your frog onto a lily pad occupied by an opposing piece to capture it and add it directly to your victory score pile.
- Scoring board formations: Discard a card from your hand to score points for every frog currently occupying the four highlighted lily pads on its pattern grid.
Pond exhaustion and crowning the master amphibian
The contest concludes when the draw deck runs dry and a player cannot execute a legal action on their turn:
- Route completion points: Every frog that successfully completes its designated journey across the pond scores points based on player count.
- Tallying captures and formations: Combine the points earned from squished enemy frogs and scored board patterns throughout the match.
- Deciding the winner: The player boasting the highest overall score at the end of the game claims victory as the undisputed ruler of the pond. Quagmire is an engaging and highly interactive abstract strategy game, perfect for fans of spatial puzzles where tactical maneuvering and sharp blocking create deep, replayable duels.
