Ambar, a Tile-Placement Game by MEBO Games
Ambar is a tile-placement game designed by Nuno Santos for Portuguese publisher MEBO Games, illustrated by Robin Lagofun. Players take on the role of museum curators organizing a collection of fossils: dinosaurs, plants, marine animals, and insects trapped in amber. Its originality lies in its components, 96 semi-transparent acrylic pieces, and its stacking mechanic that requires players to arrange their collection in ascending order.
Setup and Gameplay
Each player has their own gallery space. On their turn, a player draws a fossil from the shared pool: if it isn't already in their gallery, they can add it while respecting ascending numerical order; otherwise, the fossil stays visible and available to other players. Pieces can be stacked, within a maximum height difference of two levels from neighboring stacks.
Win Conditions and End of Game
The game ends when a player fills their gallery or the shared pool runs out. Points are scored for matching fossil types grouped together, bonuses tied to numerical values, and avoiding repeated specimens. The player with the most coherent collection wins.
