Surprised by the parade of 100 demons (Hyakki yakö), players try to reach their pagoda before the evil Yokaïs arrive.
To guide each other, players must create haikus that attempt to describe the desired location.
A haiku is a short Japanese poem consisting of three lines. It evokes emotions, wonder, and the passing of time.
Each turn, six Japanese prints are presented to the players. Each player secretly chooses one and then tries to get the other players to guess what it is by composing a haiku (a mini-poem of three lines).
To do this, the player must use three of the 16 lines available to them. One after the other, each player reads their haiku. The other players then discuss which print inspired the poem.
If successful, the players move closer to their pagoda.
If unsuccessful, the Yokaïs move closer.
The players win if they reach the pagoda and safety before the demons.
