In New Amsterdam (originally Nieuw Amsterdam), players are the wealthy “patrons” sent by the Dutch West India Company to develop the colony of New Amsterdam (now New York). They bid on action lots to build businesses, develop land for food and building materials, compete in elections to gain political power in the city, trade furs with the Lenape Indians, or ship those furs back to Europe for profit.

As the colony grows, players increase their influence by developing land, constructing buildings, and trading. The game lasts six rounds, and at the end, the player with the most prestige (victory points) wins.
New Amsterdam features auction / bidding mechanics, action selection, and economic strategy, all deeply rooted in a colonial trade-themed setting.
