Euphoria Essential Edition: A dice-and-worker-placement game set in a dystopia
In Euphoria Essential Edition, each player leads a team of workers represented by dice, sent to the far corners of an underground society in search of a new order. The game combines dice rolling, worker placement, and set collection: players gather resources, build markets, and forge alliances with rival factions to establish their authority.
The system’s originality lies in the concept of knowledge: the more knowledge the workers accumulate, the more they become aware of their condition and eventually desert, forcing players to constantly balance efficiency and control. This edition combines the core game *Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia* and the *Ignorance Is Bliss* expansion into a single box, with a revamped game board and rules to natively incorporate the four factions—Euphorians, Wastelanders, Subterrans, and Icarites—as well as the *Automa* solo mode.
Setup and Gameplay for Euphoria Essential Edition
Setup involves placing the shared game board, distributing each player’s individual board and worker dice, and laying out the Recruit cards and Market tiles available during the game. On their turn, a player moves one or more of their worker dice to action spaces on the board to harvest raw materials and goods (energy, water, food, bliss), dig tunnels into enemy territories, build markets that impose restrictions on other players, or recruit allies using Recruit cards that grant special abilities.
Managing the workers’ awareness level is crucial: you must contend with the risk of them awakening and leaving the game, which reduces the available workforce for subsequent turns.
Victory Conditions and End of the Game in Euphoria Essential Edition
The objective is to gradually place your authority tokens—represented by stars—on the various spaces on the board. Each star placed strengthens the player’s influence over a specific zone or faction.
The game ends when a player succeeds in placing all of their authority tokens on the board, thus concluding the race for power in this rapidly changing society. This end-of-game mechanic, combined with the risk management involved in knowing the workers, pushes players to balance risk-taking with consolidating their position right up until the final turns.
