Chimerium: A dice management and engine-building game set in a Victorian universe
Chimerium is a dice management and engine-building game. Set in a Victorian world where magic is in decline amid the rise of industrialization, players take on the roles of mages seeking to master the art of creating chimeras by studying species, acquiring artifacts, and releasing their creatures into a shared space known as the Aether Nexus.
The game’s originality lies in its nuanced dice management: gems and scrolls allow players to modify the value of the dice they roll, offering significant control despite the initial element of chance involved in the roll.
Setup and Gameplay
Setup involves placing the central board representing the Aether Nexus, the four player Laboratory boards, and the Chimera, Artifact, and Codex card decks.
On their turn, each player rolls and then adjusts their custom dice using gems or scrolls to meet the requirements for studying a species, acquiring an artifact, or releasing a completed chimera into the Nexus. Once in the Nexus, the players’ chimeras compete for a majority of influence—a central mechanic that determines a significant portion of each round’s final score.
Victory Conditions and End of the Game
The game ends after a number of rounds determined by the rules, marked by the progression of the Round token on the central board. Players then tally their prestige points, earned through the chimeras released, artifacts acquired, and majorities won in the Aether Nexus throughout the game.
The player who has accumulated the most prestige points wins the game and is crowned the most skilled chimera creator of the Victorian era.
