Rotation Rumble: Bows & Blades is a two-player card battle game in which each player takes on the role of a guild trainer leading their mercenaries into battle. The goal is to accumulate victory points by winning successive battles against your opponent. The core mechanic revolves around rotating square cards: each side offers a different action, requiring players to anticipate the best orientation for their fighters depending on the stage of the game. The game’s universe features battles fought for money, glory, and—with a playful nod—slices of cheesecake.
This Bows & Blades set features two captains with opposing playstyles: Sir Myrkur, who relies on synergy between knights and dragons to build momentum after each victory, and Bamduil, who uses active gold management to trigger the abilities of his elven faction. This contrast between martial power and resource management is the set’s main point of originality.
Gold, Synergies, and Combos: How a Rumble Unfolds
Setup involves choosing one of the two captains, Sir Myrkur or Bamduil, then arranging your play area with your mercenary cards and equipment cards. On their turn, a player engages or rotates their cards to activate the action corresponding to their orientation—whether that’s attacking, defending, or generating a resource.
Sir Myrkur’s faction encourages players to string together victories to gradually strengthen their knights and dragons, while Bamduil’s faction encourages players to regularly spend gold to activate the captain’s ability and convert that expenditure into victory points. The game’s compact format and small number of cards allow for quick-paced turns.
Victory Points and the Outcome of the Mercenary Battle
The game ends when one of the two players reaches the number of victory points needed to win, achieved by winning successive rounds or by exploiting their captain’s unique synergies.
With Sir Myrkur, a string of victories accelerates the team’s rise to power until the end of the game, while with Bamduil, effective gold management allows for a more consistent flow of points. Since all decks in the Rotation Rumble series are compatible with one another, Bows & Blades can also be combined with other sets to vary endgame scenarios.
