Rotation Rumble: Howls & Horrors is a two-player card battle game in which each player takes on the role of a guild trainer leading their mercenaries into battle. The goal is to accumulate victory points by winning successive battles against your opponent. The core mechanic revolves around rotating square cards: each side offers a different action, requiring players to anticipate the best orientation for their fighters depending on the stage of the game.
The game’s universe features battles fought for money, glory, and—with a playful nod—slices of cheesecake. This Howls & Horrors set features two captains with opposing playstyles: Maniac, who relies on a massive attack focused on the center line, and Sister Mae, who uses the discard pile to recycle the stats of powerful characters to other fighters. This contrast between direct aggression and tactical manipulation of the discard pile is the set’s main point of originality.
Setup involves choosing one of the two captains, Maniac or Sister Mae, then setting up your play area with your mercenary cards and support cards. On their turn, a player engages or rotates their cards to activate the action corresponding to their orientation—whether that’s attacking, defending, or triggering a recycling effect.
Maniac’s faction encourages players to concentrate their attack power on a single line to force a quick decision, while Sister Mae’s faction encourages sacrificing high-potential characters to transfer their stats to other fighters already in play. The game’s compact format and small number of cards allow for quick, back-to-back turns.
The game ends when one of the two players reaches the number of victory points needed to win, achieved by winning successive rounds or by leveraging the synergies specific to their captain.
With Maniac, constant pressure on the center line can hasten the end of the game, while with Sister Mae, the gradual recycling of stats allows for a comeback over time. Since all decks in the Rotation Rumble series are compatible with one another, Howls & Horrors can also be combined with other sets to vary endgame scenarios.
