Rotation Rumble: Sakura & Shuriken is a two-player card battle game in which each player takes on the role of a guild trainer leading their mercenaries into battle. The goal is to accumulate victory points by winning successive battles against your opponent. The core mechanic revolves around rotating square cards: each side offers a different action, requiring players to anticipate the best orientation for their fighters depending on the stage of the game.
The game’s universe features battles fought for money, glory, and—with a playful nod—slices of cheesecake. This Sakura & Shuriken set features two captains with opposing styles: Kogoro, who draws his strength from dice rolls to bolster his fighters, and Sonoko, whose abilities directly disrupt the opponent’s strategy. This contrast between calculated risk-taking and tactical disruption is the set’s main point of originality.
Setup involves choosing one of the two captains, Kogoro or Sonoko, then setting up your play area with your mercenary cards and support cards. On their turn, a player engages or rotates their cards to activate the action corresponding to their orientation—whether that’s attacking, defending, or triggering an effect specific to their faction.
Kogoro’s faction encourages players to roll the dice regularly to strengthen their fighters, regardless of the result, while Sonoko’s faction encourages players to directly disrupt their opponent’s plans to gain the upper hand. The game’s compact format and small number of cards allow for quick, consecutive turns.
The game ends when one of the two players reaches the number of victory points needed to win, which is achieved by winning successive rounds or by leveraging the synergies specific to their captain. With Kogoro, accumulating bonuses from dice rolls can speed up progress, while with Sonoko, constantly disrupting the opponent slows their progress long enough to gain the upper hand.
Since all decks in the Rotation Rumble series are compatible with one another, Sakura & Shuriken can also be combined with other sets to vary endgame scenarios.
